Hey! I'm Dan Russell. In 2014, just a year out of college, I started my own marketing agency to start living the entrepreneurial dream. A few years in, and like many entrepreneurs at that stage, I was living more of a nightmare.
I hadn't figured out the importance of "niching down," as they say. I had to figure out how to set myself apart from the standard "we'll build you a website and do your SEO" marketing crowd—and fast, or I was going to run out of money.
To top it all off, I was a little (okay, a lot) disappointed in the digital marketing industry and how it treated its clients. Revolving door agencies were a dime a dozen back then as they are today, and I couldn't figure out how some of those guys/girls slept at night taking peoples' money and not delivering any value.
The problem, as I would discover, is in the assumption that marketing results are mostly "soft" (i.e. not trackable) instead of "hard" (i.e. reportable with numbers).
So, trying to be an entrepreneur of integrity, I set out to understand the "hard" side of the business.
That resolve led me to conversion rate optimization, or the science of improving sales conversion rates for businesses. Given my experience with digital marketing, I focused exclusively on online sales funnels… BUT (and this is a big "but") I still needed an edge to what I was going to actually do to improve conversion rates.
Lucky for me, I'm a really nerdy guy.
I'm a huge physics geek and I love to learn about how complex systems work, so when I began to think about the core question that underlies all conversion rate optimization (CRO) activities—"why do we buy?"—I found myself fascinated.
The first book I read on it was Buyology by Martin Lindstrom and I was hooked. I began to pore over research studies, invest in neuromarketing (a new word that I hadn't heard of until that point) training materials, and immersed myself in the science of decision-making.
Along the way, I developed my own code of ethics for my agency for the use of this information. I began building a library of what I called NeuroTactics to house a warchest of split tests that I could pull from whenever a client came to me with a conversion problem.
This new niche was instantly a hit. Results were obvious for clients, I felt great making an impact and not feeling like a sleezy marketer, and things started to grow.
Eventually, after nine years of running my agency, I reached burnout. I had met my wife (now of eight years), Melanie, by that point and we discussed me putting down the torch and doing some of my own work. I started Hama, a personal growth community with a big vision, and supported Melanie's work by leveraging my already-sharpened marketing skills.
Today, I'm stepping back into the pool of marketing with the benefit of hindsight—highly valuable offers that are time-leveraged for everyone involved. I work with impact-driven businesses that care deeply about their work (because why else would you do it?), and my skillset continues to expand.
